OPERE SU CARTA
WORKS ON PAPER
The works on paper range from ballpoint pen drawings dating back to the artist’s time at the Academy of Fine Arts (around the mid-1980s) and multiples from that same period to acrylic works on paper created in the 2000s. While the early drawings reveal the intensely expressionistic impulse that characterizes many of the faces in his later work – featuring spontaneous marks that scratch the paper to create volume – the multiples possess a more lyrical and conceptual quality. Indeed, the multiples incorporate brief inscriptions touching upon recurring themes in Peripoli’s artistic vision: spirit and matter, memory, and thought. All of this is rendered in essential forms that suggest an inward exploration, a quest for an intimate, lyrical distillation. Finally, the acrylics on paper share the same expressive DNA as the faces painted in oil on canvas, resin, and lead during the 2000s; here, bold, expressionistic outlines combine with textured collage elements to produce the sculptural expressive intensity that defines the artist’s signature style.
