OLIO SU LEGNO (E CERAMICA)
OIL ON WOOD (AND CERAMIC)
These works, unusually small in size for Gino Peripoli, express a powerful lyricism. In search of an essential and imploded language, the artist traces his mourning process for his recently deceased mother in this series of panels.
The work Enigma is emblematic in this sense: a Tuareg blue pigment allows the grain of the wood to be glimpsed, and a natural terracotta face emerges like an ancient funeral mask. Similarly, an impossible alphabet surrounds this face with closed eyes, adding mystery to the unfathomable nature of death.
In other works from this phase, the artist’s experimentation with language often tends toward the essential, in the engraved and torch-burned panels, painted with minimal chromatic variety. In other works, however, the artist juxtaposes the vivid colour contrasts of the ceramic panels with fragments of thoughts, like an intimate diary within the plasticity of the ceramic and the vigor of the engraved and painted wood.
